How to Get Your BFCM Gift With Purchase Promotions Ready in Promo Party Pro

There is a lot going on heading into Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Merchandising, inventory, email, paid ads, discount codes, shipping deadlines, customer support, site updates. The holiday shuffle gets hectic quickly, and promotions are only one part of what a Shopify team is trying to get ready.

So we wanted to take one piece of the load off.

If gift with purchase is part of your BFCM plan this year, this checklist covers what to set up, test, and watch once the promotion goes live in Promo Party Pro. The goal is to have the campaign ready before the big rush instead of finding problems while customers are already shopping.

A gift with purchase is worth putting some time into. It gives shoppers extra value without requiring you to take another percentage off the entire order, and it works well alongside discounts when you want to give customers another reason to reach a higher cart value. Shopify even recommends gift with purchase as an alternative for brands that do not want to rely only on deeper BFCM discounts.

There is some good data behind it too. Fragrance brand WHO IS ELIJAH used tiered gift with purchase offers during Black Friday and saw average order value increase 46%, from $86 before the sale to $126 during the sale period.

Promo Party Pro has seen similar behavior in its own BFCM research. Across 3 consecutive Q4 periods, one merchant's threshold gift orders were 132% to 242% larger than its full-price orders. There is an important caveat with those numbers. A threshold campaign naturally selects larger carts, so we cannot say the gift caused all of that increase. The data does show why a spend threshold can be useful when you want to build a promotion around larger baskets instead of simply taking more money off the order.

And there will be plenty of traffic to compete for. Shopify merchants generated $14.6 billion during BFCM 2025, up 27% from 2024, with more than 81 million customers buying from Shopify-powered brands over the weekend.

That is a good reason to start testing before November traffic hits. Your gift, threshold, discount combination, inventory rules, and storefront messaging all need to work together. A campaign that looks simple to the customer may still have several moving parts behind it.

Here is what I would have ready.

Review what happened last BFCM

Start with last year's promotions if you have the data.

Look at which offers actually got used, which gifts ran out first, where your average order value increased, and which campaigns did not perform the way you expected. If you ran several gift thresholds, compare the gift add rate and AOV for each one instead of looking only at total revenue.

You do not need to repeat last year's setup just because it worked once. Use the data as a starting point and decide what still makes sense for this year's product mix, pricing, inventory, and discount plan.

Choose your gift thresholds

Your threshold should give customers a realistic reason to add more to their cart.

If your normal AOV is $70, a gift at $75 probably is not doing much work. A threshold at $90 or $100 may give customers more reason to add another product while keeping the offer within a range that makes sense for your margins. Our threshold guide walks through how to pick the number, and spend thresholds covers how they work in the app.

Promo Party's Q4 data gives us a useful example. One merchant ran the same $50 gift threshold over 3 Q4 periods and saw average qualifying carts of $98.83, $101.68, and $111.72. Its full-price AOV during those same periods was $47.13, $50.02, and $57.01.

You can run one threshold or use several tiers. Keep the structure easy to understand. Customers should know what they need to spend and what they get without doing math in the cart.

Pick gifts people actually want

A free gift does not automatically make a promotion good.

Choose something customers would be happy to receive and that fits naturally with the products they are already buying. Old inventory can work as a gift, but only if customers still see some value in it.

One test we use is simple. Would someone reasonably pay $15 or more for this product on its own? If the answer is no, it may not be strong enough to convince someone to add another item to the cart.

This is one of the areas I would test before BFCM rather than making assumptions. Try different gifts during September and October and watch which ones customers actually take. If you want to offer more than one option, the gift picker lets shoppers choose which gift they get.

Confirm gift inventory before launch

Check inventory for every SKU tied to the promotion.

This is easy to overlook when a gift comes in several sizes, colors, or variants. You may have plenty of the product overall while having very little inventory for the variants customers are most likely to choose.

Promo Party Pro has an auto-pause feature that stops the promotion when gift inventory runs out. You still want to review inventory before launch so you have a rough idea of how long the offer can run and what you will use as a backup if the first gift sells through faster than expected.

Set start and end dates ahead of time

Do not wait until Black Friday morning to turn everything on manually.

Schedule the start and end dates for each campaign in advance with scheduled promos. If you are changing promotions during the weekend, build those campaigns ahead of time too and double-check the timing.

This becomes useful when you have an early access offer, a Black Friday campaign, and something different planned for Cyber Monday. Build it while you still have time to review it rather than changing campaign rules while orders are coming in.

Add quantity limits

Set limits on how many gifts a customer can receive when the promotion requires it.

A customer buying 10 qualifying products does not always need 10 free gifts. Quantity limits protect inventory and make the cost of the promotion easier to predict.

The right limit depends on the offer. One gift per order may make sense for a spend threshold, while a product-based campaign may need something different.

Test discount code stacking

This one is important during BFCM because gift with purchase often runs alongside other offers.

If you are offering 20% off sitewide plus a free gift at $100, test the exact combination before launch. Apply the discount, cross the gift threshold, change the cart, remove products, and make sure the gift still behaves the way you expect.

Do the same thing with automatic discounts, bundles, free shipping, or any other major promotion you plan to run. You want to know how those offers work together before thousands of customers start using them.

Build your BFCM campaign now, not on Black Friday morning.

Promo Party Pro handles spend thresholds, scheduled start and end dates, gift inventory auto-pause, and quantity limits, so the promotion is ready before the traffic arrives.

Check your PDP and cart messaging

Customers should know that the promotion exists before they reach checkout.

Review your product pages, cart, promotional banners, email creative, and anywhere else the gift offer appears. Make sure the threshold, gift, dates, and basic rules match the campaign you actually built.

If customers need to spend $100, say $100. If the offer ends Monday night, make that easy to find. Keep the promotion simple enough that someone can understand it while they are shopping.

QA the promotion on mobile and desktop

Run through the entire promotion like a customer.

Add products to the cart, cross the threshold, remove an item, change a variant, apply a discount code, and confirm that the gift behaves correctly. Then repeat it on mobile.

Test the odd situations too. Drop the cart below the threshold. Try a sold-out gift variant. Change quantities. Use the discount codes you are sending to customers.

The few extra minutes you spend here are much better than discovering the problem from a customer email on Black Friday afternoon.

Watch gift add rate and AOV during BFCM

Once the promotion is live, keep an eye on the numbers.

Gift add rate tells you how often eligible customers are actually choosing the gift. AOV gives you another way to see how those qualifying orders compare with the rest of the store. Our guide on measuring gift with purchase success covers what else is worth tracking.

Do not wait until Cyber Monday is over to review performance. BFCM traffic gives you a lot of information very quickly, and you may still have time to change a gift, adjust a threshold, or update the way the promotion is being presented.

Swap a weak gift if you need to

Not every gift is going to work.

If you have enough traffic to see that customers are ignoring an offer, change it. We have seen the gift itself make a big difference even when the rest of the campaign stays the same.

Have backup gift options ready before BFCM starts. If something underperforms or sells out earlier than planned, you already know what comes next.

Get ready for BFCM using Promo Party Pro on Shopify

There are enough things to manage during the holiday season. Your gift with purchase setup should not be something you are still figuring out when Black Friday gets here.

Build the campaigns early in Promo Party Pro, test them with the other promotions you plan to run, confirm your inventory, and pay attention to what customers respond to before BFCM. You will go into the busiest shopping period of the year with real information instead of trying to guess what will work once the rush has already started.

If you are still deciding what the offer itself should be, our Black Friday gift with purchase playbook covers the campaign types, timing, and margin math behind the choice.
